     Full Idea: A body is that, which having no dependence on our thought, is coincident or coextended with some part of space.

     A reaction: This rather Cartesian view doesn't seem to offer any distinction between empty space and space containing an 'object'. Presumably it is the ancestor of the Quinean account just in terms of space-time points. Don't like it.
If you separate the two places of one thing, you will also separate the thing [Hobbes]
     Full Idea: One body cannot be in two places at the same time, ...for the place that a body fills being divided into two, the placed body will also be divided into two; the place and the body that fills that place are divided both together.

     A reaction: If every time you manipulated one body it affected both of them, you might say that one body was in two places, rather like a mirror image.

     A reaction: The wonderful things about philosophy is that you are faced with obvious truths of the world, and cannot begin to think why they are true - and then up steps a philosopher and offers you a reason.
A thing is individuated just by existing at a time and place [Locke]
     Full Idea: The principium individuationis, 'tis plain, is existence itself, which determines a being of any sort to a particular time and place incommunicable to two beings of the same kind.

     A reaction: I wish I could get completely clear about what a 'principle of individuation' is supposed to do. E.J. Lowe is always banging on about them. I would have thought that being an individual had to precede any 'principle' underlying it.
Obviously two bodies cannot be in the same place [Locke]
     Full Idea: I think it is a self-evident proposition that two bodies cannot be in the same place.

     A reaction: If you accept this, and you want to define what a physical 'body' is, then clearly this condition must be implicitly or explicitly included.
A body is that which exists in space [Leibniz]
     Full Idea: A body is defined as that which exists in space.

     A reaction: A very early view. Leibniz notes that this tells you nothing about shape and motion.
We use things to distinguish places and times, not vice versa [Leibniz]
     Full Idea: It is by means of things that we must distinguish one time and place from another, rather than vice versa.

     A reaction: This rests on Leibniz's relative view of space (as opposed to Newton's absolute view). If you need to re-identify a thing to individuate it, re-identifying the exact place or time seems impossible, but it is usually manageable with thing.
Objects only exist if they 'occupy' space and time [Russell]
     Full Idea: Only those objects exist which have to particular parts of space and time the special relation of 'occupying' them.

     A reaction: He excepts space and time themselves. Clearly this doesn't advance our understanding much, but it points to a priority in our normal conceptual scheme. Is Russell assuming absolute space and time?
Singling out extends back and forward in time [Wiggins]
     Full Idea: The singling out of a substance at a time reaches backwards and forwards to time before and after that time.

     A reaction: Presumably this is an inferred history and persistence conditions. Sounds fine in a stable world. We assume (a priori?) that any object will have a space-time line for its duration.
Times and places are identified by objects, so cannot be used in a theory of object-identity [Loux]
     Full Idea: Any account of the identity of material objects which turns on the identity of places and times must face the objection that the identity of places and times depends, in turn, on the identities of the objects located at them.

     A reaction: This may be a benign circle, in which we concede that there are two basic interdependent concepts of objects and space-time. If you want to define identity - in terms of what?
Diversity of two tigers is their difference in space-time; difference of matter is a consequence [Lowe]
     Full Idea: What really makes for the diversity of two tigers is their difference in space-time location, from which their difference in component matter at any time merely follows as a consequence.

     A reaction: I daresay this is how we manage to identify the diversity of a pair of tigers (epistemology), but is that what their diversity consists in (ontology)? That they employ different matter seems relevant. If you feed one, the other stays hungry (causation).
A 'thing' cannot be in two places at once, and two things cannot be in the same place at once [Macdonald,C]
     Full Idea: The so-called 'laws of thinghood' govern particulars, saying that one thing cannot be wholly present at different places at the same time, and two things cannot occupy the same place at the same time.

     A reaction: Is this an empirical observation, or a tautology? Or might it even be a priori synthetic? What happens when two water drops or clouds merge? Or an amoeba fissions? In what sense is an image in two places at once? Se also Idea 2351.
