     Full Idea: In reality motion is not something absolute, but consists in relation.

     A reaction: It is often thought that motion being relative was invented by Einstein, but Leibniz wholeheartedly embraced 'Galilean relativity', and refused to even consider any absolute concept of motion. Acceleration is a bit trickier than velocity.
All motion is relative, so a single body cannot move [Berkeley]
     Full Idea: There cannot be any motion other than relative; …if there was one only body in being it could not possibly move.

     A reaction: This seems to agree with with Leibniz in denying the Newton-Clarke idea of absolute space. See Idea 2100. Suppose there were two bodies racing towards one another, when one of them suddenly vanished?
Assume the speed of light is constant for all observers, and the laws of physics are the same [Einstein, by Farmelo]
     Full Idea: Einstein assumed that when each observer measures the speed of light in a vacuum, they find the same value, regardless of their speed; and that measurements will lead to agreement on the laws of physics.

The theory is 'special' because it sticks to observers moving straight, at constant speeds [Einstein, by Farmelo]
     Full Idea: Einstein's first theory is 'special' because it only deals with observers who move in a straight line at constant speeds with respect to one another.

     A reaction: Most theories of this period seem to have focused on the simplest cases, for obvious reasons.
Special relativity won't determine a preferred frame, but we can pick one externally [Smart]
     Full Idea: Though special relativity does not determine a preferred frame of reference, it does not rule out the possibility of a frame being determined from outside the theory. Perhaps we should prefer a frame where background radiation is equal in all directions.

     A reaction: Of course this is a mere philosopher offering the escape clause, and not some Nobel-winning physicist, but I start from the assumption that this idea is plausible, and I am unmoved by the contempt for presentism among relativity geeks.
The electric and magnetic are tightly linked, and viewed according to your own motion [Close]
     Full Idea: Electric and magnetic phenomena are profoundly intertwined; what you interpret as electric or magnetic thus depends on your own motion.

Space itself can expand (and separate its contents) at faster than light speeds [Krauss]
     Full Idea: Special Relativity says nothing can travel 'through space' faster than the speed of light. But space itself can do whatever the heck it wants, at least in general relativity. And it can carry distant objects apart from one another at superluminal speeds

     A reaction: Another of my misunderstandings corrected. I assumed that the event horizon (limit of observability) was defined by the stuff retreating at (max) light speed. But beyond that it retreats even faster! What about the photons in space?
The idea of simultaneity in Special Relativity is full of verificationist assumptions [Bourne]
     Full Idea: Special Relativity, with its definition of simultaneity, is shot through with verificationist assumptions.

Relativity denies simultaneity, so it needs past, present and future (unlike Presentism) [Bourne]
     Full Idea: Special Relativity denies absolute simultaneity, and therefore requires a past and a future, as well as a present. The Presentist, however, only requires the present.

     A reaction: It is nice to accuse Relativity of ontological extravagence. When it 'requires' past and future, that may not be a massive commitment, since the whole theory is fairly operationalist, according to Putnam.
