     Full Idea: Things are always both good and fine by the same standard.

     A reaction: This begs many questions, but perhaps it leads to what we call intuitionism, which is an instant ability is perceive a fine action (even in an enemy). This leads to the rather decadent view that the aim of life is the production of beauty.
Niceratus learnt the whole of Homer by heart, as a guide to goodness [Xenophon]
     Full Idea: Niceratus said that his father, because he was concerned to make him a good man, made him learn the whole works of Homer, and he could still repeat by heart the entire 'Iliad' and 'Odyssey'.

     A reaction: This clearly shows the status which Homer had in the teaching of morality in the time of Socrates, and it is precisely this acceptance of authority which he was challenging, in his attempts to analyse the true basis of virtue
A good person is bound to act well, and this brings happiness [Plato]
     Full Idea: A good person is bound to do whatever he does well and successfully, and success brings fulfilment and happiness.

     A reaction: Not how we would see it, I guess, but this is the Greek idea that a good person is one who functions well. Anyone who functions well is probably having a good time.
Oxen, horses and children cannot be happy, because they cannot perform fine deeds [Aristotle]
     Full Idea: We do not speak of an ox or a horse as happy, because none of them can take part in fine deeds; similarly, no child is happy, because its age debars it as yet from such activities.

     A reaction: This is a place where 'happy' is not a very good translation for 'eudaimon', as we universally acknowledge a 'happy childhood'. We can have a 'successful' life, but not a successful childhood. I'm not convinced that even Greeks understood 'eudaimonia'.
Good people enjoy virtuous action, just as musicians enjoy beautiful melodies [Aristotle]
     Full Idea: The good man, qua good, takes pleasure in morally virtuous actions and dislikes vicious ones, just as a musician enjoys beautiful melodies and is pained by bad ones.

     A reaction: This is the best illustration of the Greek love of 'fine' [kalon] actions. 'That was a beautiful thing you just did'.
Slaves can't be happy, because they lack freedom [Aristotle]
     Full Idea: Nobody attributes happiness to a slave, unless he also attributes to him a life of his own.

     A reaction: Give them freedom then! In 'Politics' he allows a degree of friendship between masters and slaves, and recognises that not all slaves are stupid.
Fine things are worthless if they give no pleasure [Epicurus]
     Full Idea: I spit on the fine and those who emptily admire it, when it doesn't make any pleasure.

Stoicism was an elitist option to lead a beautiful life [Stoic school, by Foucault]
     Full Idea: Stoicism offered a personal choice for a small elite. The reason for making this choice was the will to live a beautiful life, and to leave to others memories of a beautiful existence.

     A reaction: This resurfaces in the late nineteenth century aesthetic movement ("Forget living - our servants can do that for us"). I see no reason why this should not be an ideal held up for all human beings, though pleasure-seekers will probably reject it.
We get enormous pleasure from tales of noble actions [Nietzsche]
     Full Idea: How much pleasure we get from morality! Just think what a river of agreeable tears has flowed at tales of noble, generous actions.

     A reaction: How can anyone not adore Nietzsche? The pleasure of a noble deed is the most piercing and the deepest pleasure known to us. It isn't 'just' a pleasure.
Why couldn't a person's life become a work of art? [Foucault]
     Full Idea: Couldn't everyone's life become a work of art? Why should the lamp or the house be an art object, but not our life?

     A reaction: This sounds wonderfully appealing until I try to think how I would implement it. The Augustine move, from sinner to saint, is a possibility, but there is nothing good about sin. The Christian ideal, of colossal self-sacrifice, can be very heroic.
