In our reaction to a work of art (rather than a flower) there is the consciousness of purpose, of a peculiar relation of sympathy with the man who made this thing in order to arouse precisely the sensations we experience.

I think this is entirely right. I like the mention of 'sympathy' as well as 'purpose'.
