     Full Idea: It is evident that "It is true that Caesar was murdered" means no more than that Caesar was murdered.

     A reaction: At the very least, saying it is true adds emphasis. One sentence is about Caesar, the other about a proposal concerning Caesar, so they can't quite be the same. Note Frege's priority in making this suggestion.

     Full Idea: Brouwer made the rather extraordinary claim that mathematics is a mental activity which uses no language.

     A reaction: Since I take language to have far less of a role in thought than is commonly believed, I don't think this idea is absurd. I would say that we don't use language much when we are talking!

     A reaction: Hm. This seems to be modern Fregean orthodoxy. Why did the institution of counting ever get started if the things in the world didn't demand counting? Even birds are aware of the number of eggs in their nest (because they miss a stolen one).

We can still count squares, even if they overlap [Koslicki]
     Full Idea: The fact that there is overlap does not seem to inhibit our ability to count squares.

     A reaction: She has a diagram of three squares overlapping slightly at their corners. Contrary to Frege, these seems to depend on a subliminal concept of the square that doesn't depend on language.
There is no deep reason why we count carrots but not asparagus [Koslicki]
     Full Idea: Why do speakers of English count carrots but not asparagus? There is no 'deep' reason.

     A reaction: Koslick is offering this to defend the Fregean conceptual view of counting, but what seems to matter is what is countable, and not whether we happen to count it. You don't need to know what carrots are to count them. Cooks count asparagus.

     A reaction: This is the 'isolation' referred to in Frege.

     Full Idea: Brouwer regards as somehow 'wicked' the idea that mathematics can be applied to a non-mental subject matter, the physical world, and that it might develop in response to the needs which that application reveals.

     A reaction: The idea is that mathematics only concerns creations of the human mind. It presumably has no more application than, say, noughts-and-crosses.

     A reaction: The whiteness also stays the same, but isn't stuff.

     A reaction: I find this idea quite bizarre. Most sentences have no connection to any action or behavior at all. Do we have to ingeniously contrive some possible action? That is the worst sort of behaviourism. See context - Ramsey wasn't stupid!
