1. Philosophy / F. Analytic Philosophy / 1. Nature of Analysis
Analysis aims at the structure of facts, which are needed to give a rationale to analysis [Urmson, by Schaffer,J]
Full Idea: Urmson explains the direction of analysis as 'towards a structure...more nearly similar to the structure of the fact', adding that this metaphysical picture is needed as a 'rationale of the practice of analysis'.
From: report of J.O. Urmson (Philosophical Analysis [1956], p.24-5) by Jonathan Schaffer - On What Grounds What n30
A reaction: In other words, only realists can be truly motivated to keep going with analysis. Merely analysing language-games is doable, but hardly exciting.
18. Thought / B. Mechanics of Thought / 4. Language of Thought
We must have expressive power BEFORE we learn language [Fodor]
Full Idea: I am denying that one can learn a language whose expressive power is greater than that of a language that one already knows.
From: Jerry A. Fodor (How there could be a private language [1975], p.389)
A reaction: I presume someone who had a native language of limited vocabulary could learn a new language with a vast vocabulary. I can increase my expressive power with a specialist vocabulary (e.g. legal).
26. Natural Theory / C. Causation / 9. General Causation / d. Causal necessity
Causes can be inferred from perfect knowledge of their effects [Leibniz]
Full Idea: Whoever understands some effect perfectly will also arrive at the knowledge of its cause.
From: Gottfried Leibniz (Meditatio de principio individui [1676], A6.3.490), quoted by Daniel Garber - Leibniz:Body,Substance,Monad 2
A reaction: This sounds highly improbable, given that you would have thought that there could be lots of ways to bring about the same effect. Predicting effects is rather more plausible. I suppose if you can record all the ripples in the pond before they fade...
