15833 | Tell cleverness from answers, but wisdom from questions [Mahfouz] |
Full Idea: You can tell whether a man is clever by his answers. You can tell whether a man is wise by his questions.
From: Naguib Mahfouz (works [1998])
A reaction: [Popped up on Twitter. I am adjusting to the 21st century] The observation is simplistic, of course, but very nice indeed. |
10800 | The values of variables can't determine existence, because they are just expressions [Ryle, by Quine] |
Full Idea: Ryle objected somewhere to my dictum that 'to be is to be the value of a variable', arguing that the values of variables are expressions, and hence that my dictum repudiates all things except expressions.
From: report of Gilbert Ryle (works [1950]) by Willard Quine - Reply to Professor Marcus p.183
A reaction: I have a lot of sympathy with Ryle's view, and I associate it with the peculiar Millian view that we can somehow replace a name in a sentence with the actual physical object. Objects can't be parts of sentences - and maybe they can't be 'values'. |
5960 | When the soul is intelligent and harmonious, it is part of god and derives from god [Plutarch] |
Full Idea: The soul, when it has partaken of intelligence and reason and concord, is not merely a work but also a part of god and has come to be not by his agency but both from him as source and out of his substance.
From: Plutarch (67: Platonic Questions [c.85], II.1001)
A reaction: A most intriguing shift of view from earlier concepts of the psuché. How did this come about? This man is a pagan. The history is in the evolution of Platonism. See 'The Middle Platonists' by John Dillon. Davidson is also very impressed by reason. |
