All items of possible human knowledge are interconnected, and can be reached by inference [Descartes]
Full Idea: All the items of knowledge that lie within the reach of the human mind are linked together with a marvellous bond, and can be derived from each other by necessary inferences.
From: René Descartes (unfinished dialogue [1649])

An explanation is a table of statistical information [Salmon, by Strevens]

From: report of Wesley Salmon (Statistical Explanation [1970]) by Michael Strevens - No Understanding without Explanation 1
A reaction: [He cites W.Salmon 1970] When put like that the view sounds incredibly implausible, but maybe a reading of Salmon would improve the case for it.

Philosophers are the forefathers of heretics [Tertullian]

I believe because it is absurd [Tertullian]
Full Idea: I believe because it is absurd ('Credo quia absurdum est').
From: Tertullian (works [c.200]), quoted by Robert Fogelin - Walking the Tightrope of Reason n4.2
A reaction: This seems to be a rather desperate remark, in response to what must have been rather good hostile arguments. No one would abandon the support of reason if it was easy to acquire. You can't deny its engaging romantic defiance, though.
