[catalogued under 7. Existence / D. Theories of Reality / 9. Vagueness / f. Supervaluation for vagueness]

Full Idea

Supervaluationism cannot eliminate higher-order vagueness. It must conduct its business in a vague meta-language. ...[162] All truth is at least disquotational, and supertruth is not.

Gist of Idea

Supervaluationism cannot eliminate higher-order vagueness

Source

Timothy Williamson (Vagueness [1994], 5.6)

A Reaction

This is Williamson's final verdict on the supervaluation strategy for vagueness. Intuitively, it looks as if merely narrowing down the vagueness (by some sort of consensus) is no solution to the problem of vagueness.
